The Absolute Number 1 Rule Of Business

There's always been one BIG rule to business in my drive to succeed. As a creative person I have tried my hand in just about every avenue of making something. As a little girl my mother taught my to sew and I thought if I could master that I could do just about anything. As I grew up and responsibility and earning a living took over my love of creating was put to the back burner as 9-5 took over. The same routine day in day out played out on repeat. When I became a mother and my little ones began to grow my love for creating surfaced again and my ultimate passion for writing sprung forth. All those late nights became productive as I began to write The Curvies series.
Now you may think that writing is not a small business but oh how wrong you would be, It's all well and good to write a book, but when you are an Independent publisher it's all about getting it edited, published, marketing and letting the world know about it. The writing part was only about 10 percent of the effort it takes to get it in front of the readers.
After my books were released for a while and the number of sales began to slow, I got into a little bit of a panic as to what I should write next? What did readers want to read? Am I good enough? My mind began to wander as I started a new novel, only to hate it. Feeling like it just wasn't me. Now like I said before, I've had my hands in a lot of Jars, I made Brooch Bouquets, Sewing, Music. The list is quite large and I loved them all. I took a step back from my writing for just a moment and thought about what I was doing. I had gotten myself to a place where I was no longer happy. Writing didn't do that to me. It will forever be my number one choice for happiness, second would be reading lol. What got me to a point of wanting to give it up, is that I lost focus on what was Important. ME! What I represented. So are you ready for it? The Number 1 rule in business.
Don't do anything where your first goal is to make money. Do something you absolutely love so much that you would be happy to do it for free. You'll find that the financial rewards will follow. If you put money as the target, you won't be satisfied
This is something that I absolutely live by. Don't get me wrong, whether you are a creative like me, small business owner, entrepreneur or a big fish in a multi million dollar corporation this should be your first thought in business. We all want the success and my goodness we deserve it with the hours we put in. Remember those 9-5 days I whinged about earlier? Well I think I work about 80 hours a week now that I have started IndieLove Magazine. But I LOVE it! I love what I do. I Love that no matter whether the Magazine grows to extreme proportions or whether it stays Niche and exclusive. I would proudly get up every morning and continue doing what I do.
I know there's so much more to business! Believe me I do. I've done it. I'm doing it. And in my next lot of posts i'm going to tackle as much as possible. I'll give you what has worked for me and what hasn't. What resources are best and what isn't worth it. But for now I wanted to start you off with my number 1 rule. Stick it on your fridge and never lose sight of why you went after your dream to begin with. Because you loved the idea.
